The Design
  • 20 detector cassettes on the ring
  • each cassette has 4 PMT in line
  • each PMT has 64 photocathodes
  • each photocathode reads 1 phoswich
  • each phoswich has 2 crystals LYSO and LuYAP
  • each crystal is 2 x 2 x 10mm³
  • open gantry diameter adjustable 125 - 220mm
  • rotation 360 degree

The ClearPET is a high performance small animal PET scanner that has been developed within the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC) and is now commercially available to customers worldwide through the raytest group. Its high sensitivity and spatial resolution are achieved thanks to a patented phoswich configuration made of two types of scintillating crystals: LYSO and LuYAP, thus providing Depth-of-interaction (DOI) information.

The LYSO-LuYAP double layer phoswich matrix coupled to a multi-anode PMT contains 8x8 crystals per layer with a crystal size of 2x2x10 mm3.
The phoswich matrix allows the use of DOI-Information for high resolution combined with thick crystal layer (20 mm total) which is necessary for high sensitivity

DOI-Information improves resolutions enormously

In the commercial version 8x8 phoswich units, each one composed of one LYSO crystal coupled to one LuYAP (both of dimensions 2x2x10 mm3), are glued to multichannel Photomultiplier tubes. A unit of four PMTs arranged in-line represents one of 20 sectors of the ring design and is designed as a " cassette ". The gantry on which the 20 cassettes are fixed allows for rotation of the detector modules around the field of view.

The commercial ClearPET scanner presents the following innovative features:
  • A double layer of LYSO and LuYAP crystals in phoswich configuration, that provides Depth of Interaction information.
  • Two adjustable detector diameters: 135 mm & 285 mm. The first is suitable for whole body rodent studies whereas the second is ideal for primates brain studies
  • A modular design: the 80 modules (PMTs+crystals) are arranged as 20 cassettes that contain 4 modules plus readout electronics. The cassettes are fixed to a rotating gantry for a more homogeneous sampling.

The 1st commercial Clear PET scanner was assembled at the Animage platform in Lyon. The results obtained with this scanner confirm the excellent performances announced: Sensitivity ≈ 4% at CFOV and an average spatial resolution of 1.3mm at the CFOV, thus being fully competitive with other small animal PET scanners in the market. The ClearPET in addition presents the unique feature of a rotating gantry thus allowing partial ring configurations and an adjustable detector diameter suitable for rodent and primate studies.

Modular structure to satisfy the needs of our customers

Depending on what our customers demand, we can offer the ClearPET in several variations.

The basic system contains of 4 detector cassettes.
According to the costumer requirements, the ClearPET basic system is able to build up with further 4, 8, 12 or 16 cassettes.

The sensitivity increase with the number of cassettes. For example
4 cassettes provides a sensitivity of ≈ 0.8%,
8 cassettes provides a sensitivity of ≈ 1.5%.

The average spatial resolution of 1.3mm remains with every variation.
